PART I
Did it ever occur to you, that the corruption in the world thrives on the wheels of lust (2Peter 1:4), lasciviousness, subtle coveteousness and a relentless thirst for the goal of self satisfaction. To begin with, let's have a closer look at words related to “corruption” and “lust”,
— Lust and it's related words are : Inordinate desire, morbid longing, sinful craving, extravagant passion, depraved appetite, lewdness, lechery, lasciviousness, pruriency, carnal desire, animal appetite, carnality, evil concupiscence.
— Corruption on the other hand speaks of putrefaction, putrescence, defilement, contamination, pollution, infection, vitiation, adulteration, debasement, depravity, depravation, wickedness, demoralization, immorality, laxity, looseness of morals, want of principle, bribery, dishonesty, abuse of public trusts.
Frankly it's shocking to see that carnality is the most basic definition of lust, and with that, the Bible clearly informs us in Romans 8:6, “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (progress)” — though the deception of lust is largely related to the fulfilment of one's inordinate desires, thus progress towards one's sinful cravings, yet it is no progress at all — to be carnally minded is indeed death because dead things don't make progress.
Speaking of death, James 1:14-16, BLB explains the stages of lust that shoves a man into death (absent progress and a life of confusion), it says — “But a man is tempted, being drawn away and being enticed by the own desire. Then desire having conceived, gives birth to sin; and sin having become fully grown, brings forth death. Do not be misled, my beloved brothers”.
Always hand over your desires to God's word and take the ones He offers you, better still, get off these corrupt social media platforms and the movies you watch, they're corrupting your conscience — but if you desire to own your sexual desires like James mentioned, the process of decadence begins almost immediately : you'll observe that desire to watch the wrong pictures and videos will now lead you to abandon God's word (thus sin, because anything done outside faith is sin), then when the Word in your heart is fully ironed out completely by way of a seared conscience, then full blown guilt and unpleasant thoughts begin to take root, and the state of that man is worse than it used to be, because of the stages of these dark infiltrations.
The phrase “Then desire having conceived” is quite amazing because the writer of this book was a Jew and definitely spoke Hebrew. Now in the Hebrew language, “to conceive” is a synonym for “imagination”, and it speaks of a “shaping within”, “and a forming inwardly” — implying your imagination is the powerhouse of your life because as a man thinks (imagines in his heart), so he is and nothing will be impossible for that man. What you fill your mind with is the force that overtakes your life. And like martial law, those dark desires overrides the word (Biblical laws) of God in your heart if desire is allowed to outgrow, covering the light of God's word in your conscience.
Imagination is a colloquial term for “a nation of images” — so it matters the quality of pictures you contemplate on, and the subtle art of nakedness (Pornography) is no different in our generation. We live in a nation of sexual images, be it on billboards, Internet adverts or even the streets in downtown, it's all glistening all round us — but it's important how we choose to process these pictures and icons (title pictures) because they open up unending folders in the flesh. This is too important, my dear!
Romans 6:12 encourages us, “Therefore do not let sin (the rejection of God's word) reign in your mortal body, THAT YOU SHOULD OBEY IT (Sin, the rejection of God's word ) THROUGH LUSTS ”.
Paul the Apostle in 1Corinthians 6:13 spoke by the Spirit in this wise “... Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body” — this clearly informs you that your body is truly the temple of the living God, so why would you carry the Holy Ghost to a shrine, do you know what you just did? — Jesus said, I am with you always, even to the end of the world, and this also applies to the Holy Spirit He gave us, so unlike David, the Spirit of God cannot depart from you regardless of what you do because He's homeless without the collective body of which you're a necessary part. This is why it's incumbent on you what you allow in, to and through your body, be conscious of the truth that somebody lives inside you, He is God the Holy Spirit.
The devil cannot create anyone, rather, he hijacks God's creation through deception and thievery — you belong God, be it your body, soul (will, emotions and mind) or spirit, the Lord is master over all, so you're not permitted to use the body He gave you for the devil's work — thus corruption, championed through lust, be it through the media or the fashion of art and creativity, we have to be careful of satan's mind games. This is too important.
It isn't automatic to live a pure life devoid of these works of the flesh if you attempt living it outside Christ and the power of His empowering Word,
— in Psalms 119:9 |BSB, the Psalmist David who once fell victim to having an illicit affair with Bathsheba exclaims “How can a young (strong and sexually stirred) man keep his way pure (without sexual indulgence)? (unless) By guarding it (his purity) according to Your word”.
My dear, without the word you're sunk. You will do what you do not want to because the flesh is weak, meaning it cannot carry you on for long before it gives up on you — and your love for God isn't enough to keep you from such a plight David faced if you do not have God's word resident in you. David was a man who loved God, He was a man after God's own heart but that wasn't enough to hold him back!
David was already married when he slept with Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife. At the time of the incident recorded in 2 Samuel 11, David had multiple wives. Earlier in 1 Samuel 25:42–43, he had married Abigail and Ahinoam, and by 2 Samuel 3:2–5, David had several wives and children from them. Hence, his sin with Bathsheba was not only adultery (since she was married to Uriah) but also an abuse of power and LUST, despite already having multiple wives.
David loved God but lust was also near to his heart because he failed to pour enough of God's word in His heart, because only through the Word can the Holy Spirit withdraw you from destructive desire.
Further on, David slept with Bathsheba in his palace in Jerusalem, based on the account recounted in 2 Samuel 11:2–4,
“And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself (NAKED, THUS UNPLANNED PORNOGRAPHY); and the woman was VERY BEAUTIFUL to look upon. And David sent and ENQUIRED (GOOGLED, SEARCHED) after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he LAY (HAD SEX) with her...”
The biblical phrase “She came in unto him”, from a Hebraic standpoint would indicate that Bathsheba was brought into David’s palace, likely his private chambers. The text makes it clear from a Rabbinical standpoint that the act happened after she had purified herself from her menstrual uncleanness (v.4), a detail that underscores the deliberate nature of David's decision. Thus, the sin took place within David's royal residence in Jerusalem, after he summoned her from her home.
What you see draws you closer to itself, and what you invest (immerse) your senses into will take shape your desires. And once desire grows inside you, it becomes a force that drags you like a slave into what it erupts uncontrollably in your being. Desire drags you when it masters your emotion, so be careful what you open up to.
Actually, James 1:13-14, NIV, the Bishop of the Church in Jerusalem explained the concept of desire clearly, he said,
“When tempted (sexually or corruptly), no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are DRAGGED AWAY BY THEIR OWN EVIL DESIRE and ENTICED ”.
Right from Genesis, where Eve was enticed by the fruit she saw, here she engaged desire with her senses, and there she lost control, sadly, the influence of desire is an encompassing aura the blinds others that permeate that radius of weakness. Adam also partook of the fruit. His engagement with his sense organs made him forget the word of God, and that was the beginning of the bane of humanity.
My dear, it's always been so, it's not changed that lust underscores, underlines and highlights the onset of corruption in our world today — but we have hope in Christ Jesus (as new creatures) because 2Peter 1:4, our opening verse, explains how we have by birth escaped the power of sin and immortality by virtue of the new birth. Here he writes, “... Having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” — he used the past tense “escaped”, meaning we have already escaped the destiny of the natural man, therefore immorality has no power over your mind and body. Now declare it. O' Hallelujah, Wow!
